Don Davies, the NDP candidate for Vancouver-Kingsway, said housing needed to be addressed in this federal election.
"It's not an issue. It's a crisis facing Canadian housing ...Canada has one of the lowest rates of social
housing in the developed world."
On the Kingsway Community (Georgia Straight, September 24)
"I really respect and appreciate and like the multicultural fabric of our riding," Davies said.
"That’s why I live in Kingsway. I’m the only candidate who lives here with roots here."
On Crime (Province, September 21)
"Our community has been touched by handguns and gang activity and elevated crime," he said.
"That is why I am pleased to see our national campaign come out with a strategy to take action."
Unlike Prime Minister Stephen Harper's approach to crime reduction, Davies said, the NDP's is more "balanced."
Not only does the NDP want to be tough on crime, he said, but also tough on the causes of crime."
On Transit Security (Province, September 11)
Davies, who thinks all three levels [of government] have to get more involved in transit, proposed paying for the
extra security by using a cent per litre of the gas tax collected. "To say the safety of passengers
is not affordable is wrong," he said.
On replacing David Emerson (Vancouver Sun, September 9)
Davies, a 45-year-old lawyer, was front and centre at the event among more than a dozen party
candidates from the Lower Mainland. Many supporters were hopeful that Davies would close the 4,500-vote gap
that separated the Liberals and the NDP in the last election.
"It's going to be a very close election," said Davies. "I believe the whole country will be watching this [riding]."
