NDP Candidates Don Davies and Jenn McGinn, along with NDP MLA Adrian Dix, Will Work Together for Improved Transit Safety along Rapid Transit Lines
Vancouver-Don Davies, NDP Candidate for Vancouver-Kingsway today joined NDP MLA Adrian Dix, and provincial Vancouver-Fairview candidate Jenn McGinn to call for increased security at Skytrain Stations.
“I pledge to work with Jack Layton and an NDP Government to secure increased federal funding for public transit,” said Davies. “I will ensure Vancouver commuters receive, efficient, clean, and convenient service, while making certain transit riders’ safety is assured.”
In 2005, Jack Layton and the NDP re-wrote the 2005 Liberal budget that cancelled $4.6-billion in corporate tax cuts to invest in better priorities—including $900-million for public transit.
“We cannot build public transit without making the absolutely necessary investment in the security of people who depend on public transit on a daily basis,” said Dix. “Last November the NDP put forward a 10-point plan to address safety concerns at SkyTrain stations, including having at least one security person on site at all times and implementing a pilot ‘safe-walk’ program.”
Transit security and safety has been an ongoing issue in the Vancouver region, following a series of attacks at SkyTrain stations. With much of the new Canada line supported by Federal money, the NDP wants to make sure funding is used to ensure construction continues with the safety of riders in mind.
“As the MLA for Vancouver-Fairview I will continue my work to ensure safetey for women, and in light of the recent attacks at SkyTrain stations I will make transit security for women a priority,” said McGinn. “As listed in Adrian Dix’s 10 point plan, I will endeavour to restore support for victims’ services, anti-violence against women programs and women’s centres.”
“I will work for increased security at Skytrain stations, build new turnstiles, and ensure better lighting at all transit stops,” added Davies “We cannot cut corners when it comes to peoples’ safety.”
