NDP statement on B.C. Court of Appeal’s decision in Cambie Surgeries case

Federal NDP Health Critic, Don Davies, issued the following statement:

“Canada’s New Democrats are very pleased to see the decision issued today by the B.C. Court of Appeal in Cambie Surgeries Corporation v. British Columbia (Attorney General).

By unanimously dismissing the appeal, the Court has upheld our province’s public healthcare laws and rejected the attempt to inject private, two-tier access into our system.

There is no question that the Canadian healthcare system is under serious strain. The NDP knows that the answer to this crisis is to strengthen and expand our public healthcare system, rather than allowing the wealthy few to buy their way to the front of the line.

We want to express our deep appreciation to the Province of British Columbia, the Horgan government and all those allies of Medicare who played such a pivotal role in defending every Canadian’s right to access healthcare on an equal basis.

We look forward to working with all levels of government to build a more comprehensive, universal, and quality system for all Canadians.”
